Ileane has made a name for herself in the social media and blogging world with BasicBlogTips.com, and her podcast Ms. Ileane Speaks, both places to go when you need professional advice on making the most out of your blog and social networking. I had the pleasure to speak with her yesterday on podcasting, blogging, and more. Check out what she had to say below!
Hi Ileane, thanks for doing this interview with us! How are you?
I’m doing great and I’m looking forward to the new year.
As are we! So first thing’s first, how exactly did you get into podcasting?
I started off with video blogging, or as some call it vlogging, the same time I started blogging. I was uploading videos to YouTube, Vimeo, Meta Cafe and a bunch of other sites. So I decided to upload them to iTunes, too, and I called it a podcast. I think a lot of podcasters would argue that it really wasn’t a podcast, but I’m not a purist.
Cool. When it comes to blogging success you mention the three Cs of blogging success: Connections, Collaborations, Confidence. Do you think the same applies to podcasting?
I’m glad you had a chance to read that post I wish everyone would read it.
In my view, those three C’s apply to anything you do in life that you want to be successful in. I know that in blogging people always say that “Content is King” and a lot of people were surprised to see that I didn’t include content as one of my C’s. But I’ve been around to see many bloggers who had lousy content, but yet they appear to be relatively successful in many ways. So the definition of “good” content is so relative that I wish people would stop using that terminology. I know there are a few podcasts that are very popular but I would scream the whole way through if I was forced to listen them.
Collaborations are SUPER important and you have to make those right connections first in order to get positive outcomes from those collaborations. That’s why you’re starting to hear people talk more about joining “mastermind groups” and “tribes” or even a plain old Facebook group, and using them to get you connected to the right sort of people.
Great point. You use all three of the main methods of communicating, video, audio,blogging. Do you prefer one over the other, or think that one can work alone over the others?
They can all work on their own. In fact, I’m one of the few people I know who is doing all three because each format is very time consuming and you have to have a degree of passion in order to stay focused on any of them. I’m glad I don’t have to pick because I just go where my spirit moves me on any given day. For example I might start writing a blog post and half way through I’ll feel like it would be better as a video. Personally I’m a visual learner and I love watching videos over reading stuff. I wish everyone had a YouTube channel. But of course when I’m in the car driving to work or somewhere I need to have a good podcast to listen to :).
Dave Thackeray mentioned repurposing content you already have into different mediums. For example, taking a blog article you already having and adapting that into a podcast. What do you think?
Dave’s a cool guy. I did a hangout with him on Google+ a few weeks ago, and now we’re podcasting buds :).
Repurposing is the perfect thing to do when you run out of ideas, that’s for sure. It’s also a good way to bring all of your best work together in one place. So for example, if I wanted to do a best of Basic Blog Tips for 2011, I would do that as a podcast rather than a blog post, but it could work either way. That’s the beauty of being involved with all three formats.
How do you go about making good content?
As I said earlier “good content” is relative so I try to put myself in the shoes of the listener, or the reader and I say, “What is it that I care about?” or “What is it that I’ve wanted to do if only I knew how?” I think that’s why people keep coming back for more because I try to give them what they want. It’s not about me, it’s about the reader, it’s about the audience and satisfying a need that they have. I did a post recently called Promoting Your Content on YouTube. The very first thing I started off with was making a list of all the excuses I’ve heard people making about why they DON’T make YouTube videos. Then I listed several easy (and free) options that people can use, to overcome each one of those excuses. So it’s like planting seeds. They might not go out and make a video right after reading that post, but they will think about it and one day they’ll be stuck for an idea or they’ll be feeling feisty enough to give it a try. So to answer your question – to me good content makes you think it stays with you and eventually it moves you to action.
And finally, what do you think of Spreaker?
I guess you know already but most of your readers might not know – a few months ago I did a podcast episode called My Wishlist for Spreaker. Almost every issue I had on that list has been addressed and I couldn’t be more pleased with that. It made me feel so special, and I’m sure you guys were already working on the features we have now, like embed codes for indivual episodes and playback controls so we can pause and scroll through podcasts. But I’d like to think that I pushed the process just a little (see now that’s what I call “good content”).
