Meet the Team volume 18 #Dema

0

Despite introducing him only now, Dema has been with Spreaker since the very beginning. We’ll find it hard to believe if you don’t find our backend developer’s interview and recording highly entertaining:

Hi! Thanks for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

Good for the moment, but I know I’m about to get shot by some paintball guns therefore don’t ask me the same question in a couple of hours ;).

We will (and did) get you good. Can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

Yes I can. But I won’t.

Just kidding, I’m a backend developer, whatever that means.

Thanks for indulging us. How did you start your job at Spreaker?

You mean my first day at work? First thing I did was ring the bell to get in. Once I did get in, I placed my laptop on a fabulous desk which is actually a ping pong table (you might not believe it but it’s really comfortable!) and the magic began.

So, which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

You know every person that tries the iPad app immediately falls in love with it, but since I’m an old-style kind of guy I’d say I prefer the web based deejay console; it’s easy to use yet powerful and it really allows everyone to speak up and share his or her opinions with the rest of the world.

Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

Simple: it’s the best company in the world.

Well said. Even if you are a newbie, do you have any fun memories that you would like to share?

There are many, but my favorite is about a car trip that happened a couple of years ago involving a guy on the dev team; let’s give him a fantasy name to protect his privacy, let’s say his name is “Mark.” So these guys from Spreaker were traveling on an Italian motorway and they wanted to stop at a rest station. “Mark” spotted the sign first and said:

– Hey guys, look, we can stop at the ‘P. O. West Service Station’ right ahead.

spelling the “P.O.” in a very professional and computer sciencey tone, so that it could be well understood.

But obviously the service area name was referring to the main italian river, called the “Po,” which had been crossed just moments before. I wonder if in the U.S. “Mark” would have spelled also the “M.I.S.S.I.S.S.I.P.P.I.” service station ;).

BTW, I’m not that newbie you know, my user id at Spreaker is #3. To give you a reference, Zuckerberg’s at Facebook is #4.

What are your favorite podcasts on Spreaker?

The bit a bit show. It’s a pity it hasn’t been recorded in a while.

Where can we find you on the internet?

Thanks for you time and lovely interview, Dema!

Meet the Team Volume 17 #Massimiliano

And yet, we have another new team member to introduce to you – meet Massimiliano, our new Front-end Developer. When he’s not working on making Spreaker easier to use, he’ll be plotting practical jokes on the rest of us. Bring it on!

Hi! Thanks for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

Fine, and when temperatures rise above zero degrees I’ll be even better!

Can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

My name is Massimiliano, I am 30 years old, and I’m Spreaker’s new Font-end Developer. I’ll be working on making Spreaker faster and more convenient to use.

Great! How did you start your job at Spreaker?

I’ve known and followed Spreaker for a long time, and have known Marco for even longer (from high school). Then I noticed they were looking for a Front-end Developer in Berlin, and tried my luck – and now here I am!

So, which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

I think its ability to give everyone the opportunity to create and broadcast their own show is great!

Us too! Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

The guys are great, and here I have a chance to innovate, learn and experiment new technologies – and Berlin is really wonderful!

Even if you are a newbie, do you have any fun memories that you would like to share?

Nothing special at the moment, but since I like playing jokes, I am sure it will happen soon!

We’re looking forward to them. What are your favorite podcasts on Spreaker?

I like Never Stop Rock a lot!

Where can we find you on the internet?

On Twitter, my username is @massifassi.

Welcome, massifassi!

Meet the Team Volume 15 #Manuele

Since arriving in Berlin, our team has been steadily growing, and one of our latest additions has been Manuele. We spoke to the our new designer about what he does and what it’s like to arrive in Germany, without knowing a lick of German.

Hi Manuele! Thanks for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

Really fine, thanks. I’ve just arrived in Berlin and it’s pretty exiting to be here.

Can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

Sure, my name is Manuele, and I work as a designer here at Spreaker.
Basically my main job here is to make Spreaker even easier, more engaging and fun to use. And I really like it, indeed!

How did you start your job at Spreaker?

I’ve known Marco since the university years. A while ago he asked me if I wanted to meet the other guys at Spreaker, and of course I did. Basically they were looking for a designer and I was looking for a new challenge. A pretty good match I would say…

We think so too. So, which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

The ability to broadcast live, I believe that this is one of those features that really sets Spreaker apart and can be a lot of fun to use.

Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

The team is simply great, driven and full of energy, and this really makes all the difference in the world to me. Also, working on Spreaker gives me a world of opportunity to elaborate and experiment in design for social interactions and sound creation and consumption. As a designer I couldn’t ask for more.

Even if you are a newbie, do you have any fun memories that you would like to share?

Well, nothing in particular yet, but I did just move to Germany without knowing a word of German. I’m sure I’m about to build a big, really big, collection of fun memories!

What are your favorite podcasts on Spreaker?

Lately I would say EAST COAST ROCKERS.

Where can we find you on the internet?

You can follow me on Twitter, I’m @Fhuel.

Thanks Manuele and have fun in Berlin 😉

Meet the Team Volume 13 #Donald

Hi Donald! Thank you for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

I’m doing fine.  Always too busy, but I choose to be active and love to be learning and doing new and challenging things.

Awesome! First, can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

I am a veteran of four startup businesses in the Silicon valley, and now I am working part-time helping Spreaker establish operations in the United States. I also host a weekly show The Free COO with Francesco and RC where we offer free advice on building and running a startup company.

How did you start your job at Spreaker?

I met Francesco at a networking event in San Francisco in May of 2011.  Shortly after that, I introduced Francesco to the people running a Startup Days event in San Francisco and Spreaker was invited and ultimately voted the best new startup by the panel of Venture Capitalists and the audience in attendance.  We subsequently became friends and attended some San Francisco Giants games together.  In November, Francesco asked if I could help out with Spreaker’s move to the U.S.

We know we’re in good hands. Which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

Wow, there are so many great features.  I really love the iPhone app.  It has pretty much replaced my radio now.  I plug it into my car and listen in to so many of the great shows on Spreaker.  My degree was in acoustical engineering so, I also appreciate the great sound quality of Spreaker.  Finally, the interactive nature of Spreaker is truly groundbreaking.  The ability to interact with the host in real-time via Spreaker’s chat is fantastic.

Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

The number one reason is the team.  Everyone here has been a pleasure to work with, are very smart, and are passionate about the service and our customers.  I also really enjoy engaging with the various talent on Spreaker.  There are so many different programs and broadcasters who each have a different motivation for broadcasting and create unique and interesting content.  They have been very open with me in the chat, via email, or Skype conversations.  They seem to love the service as much as we do and always offer great suggestions and feedback about everything we do.

Yeah I’d say we’re a cool bunch of folks. Do you have any fun memories that you would like to share?

At my last startup, when we hit a certain revenue milestone, the entire team flew off to Hawaii for a long weekend.  It was a great reward and built wonderful and strong relationships.  We are hoping to do the same at Spreaker!

That would be amazing! What are your favorite podcasts on Spreaker?

The Chris Top Program is so much fun to listen to and to participate in the chat.  I always find Tazz Daddy to be inspiring and fun.  Angel Clark’s show is thought provoking.  I think that Engine House Training and The Chris Allen Weather Podcast are interesting examples of corporate uses for Spreaker.

What drives you crazy?

In California, the state Department of Transportation is called CalTrans.  It drives me crazy when I see the waste, duplication of effort, and cost overruns that they cause.  Nobody ever gets fired or is held accountable for their mistakes.  If I were governor, I would shut it down and start over.

Lastly, where can we find you on the internet?

On Spreaker of course, The Free COO. You can also go to my Facebook fan page, TheFreeCOO or my blog.  You can follow me at @thefreecoo on Twitter or email me here.

Meet the Team Volume 12 #RC

RC is our true-blue radio veteran working Stateside in our San Fran office. He’s both broadcast and business savvy, and this week’s interviewee for Meet the Team:

Hi there! Thank you for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

I’m good thanks! Trying to survive the Bay Area weather this year is “interesting” to say the least – it was 75 degrees two weeks ago and it’s storming today!

Kind of been like that in our parts, too. First, can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

My name is RC, and I’m an Aries. Seriously, I’m a long time radio person who was a VERY early adopter of digital (1999). I happily handle Business Development & Partnerships for Spreaker!

How did you start your job at Spreaker?

I honestly stalked Francesco! Well, kind of…last year I caught a press release that Spreaker was setting up US operations here in San Francisco, so I sent him a note to introduce myself and see if he needed any help – I’ve been on since!

Ha, great story! Which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

The one-touch live broadcast feature on our app. Simply put, this is a game changer in the industry.

Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

1. The excitement of helping to build a new brand. Spreaker is changing the way people look at web and mobile audio.

2. I get to work with folks from Italy! This is exciting for me because one of my hobbies is International Studies (pretty cool huh?). I also speak very basic (and very broken) Italian, because I took it in the 7th and 8th grades.

Do you have any fun memories that you would like to share?

Total radio DJ story: When I first started out on the air, I was working a late night on a weekend. I put on a long song to go to the bathroom, and…yep, I locked myself out of the studio. Nothing like having to walk to a payphone (this was the early 90’s), call my Program Director at 3am and have him come let me in!

Hilarious and memorable for your listeners too, I’m sure. What are your favorite podcasts on Spreaker?

The Free COO, The Chris Top Program, The Tazz Daddy Radio Movement and The Stoner Jesus Show!

What drives you crazy?

Things that move slowly, people who don’t respect their elders and commuting.

Last but not least, where can we find you on the internet?

Meet the Team Volume 5 #Alessandro

Alessandro is one of our talented developers here at Spreaker, the man behind the new and improved iOS and Android apps. He took part in this week’s version of Meet the Team.

Hi Alex! Thank you for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

Yesterday my dog, Luna, hurt my left shoulder while I was taking her for a walk… but I’m fine, thanks!

Oh no, so sorry to hear! Well, first, can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

Of course! My name is Alessandro, I’m 26 years old, and I come from Venice, Italy. I’m the mobile developer here at Spreaker, the iGuy :).

How did you start your job at Spreaker?

In the early days of Spreaker, a friend of mine had created a show (Sunday Night Fever) with his friends, and I would listen to them thinking “there’s no Spreaker mobile app? I can’t believe it! I have to do something about that.” A couple of emails later, I became a part of the Spreaker family, working on their first version of the iOS app.

And you did such a great job! Which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

It might sound obvious, but what I like most on Spreaker is the mobile app, both the iOS and Android versions. They allow you to listen and create audio content anywhere – you could be walking around the city, or in a train. It’s simple and tiny, but powerful and fun all at the same time!

But my favorite feature is the one we’re actually about to come out with – and no, I can’t tell you anything about it or it’ll be my head ;)!

Oh, secrets! Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

You never get bored here! There are always things to do, discuss, and develop. Spreaker is very dynamic, feels like a team, and full of fools like me! :).

Any fun memories that you’d like to share?

While running the first tests on the recording feature of our mobile app, I would listen to episodes made by my colleagues. They would talk to me, not only about how the app was working, but also about what they were doing in the office, what they ate for lunch, or what was happening out the window – often mixing in some questionable language that I can’t repeat here. It was really funny :).

Sounds like how they would act. What are your favorite podcasts on Spreaker?

I really like talk shows about tech stuff, like SAP Technology Innovation Show, and Down the Rabbithole. Most of all, I love podcasts featuring lots of rock music!

What drives you crazy?

I call them “Sunday drivers,” and they’re people who think they’re the only ones on the road. They’re slow, they constantly look out the window, but never at the road, and they brake randomly for no reason… they’re dangerous! You can sometimes recognize them with their hats on, in the car! That’s a bad sign guys! Stay away from them! Basically they have no driving experience because, as their name states, they drive only one day a week. They drive me crazy!

Lastly, where can we find you on the internet?

The simplest way is through Twitter, follow me at @DrAL3X.

Meet the Team Volume 4 #Tonia

0

Tonia is our trustworthy Community Manager here at Spreaker. Fun-loving and warm, she was happy to take part in this week’s rendition of Meet the Team.

Hi Tonia! Thank you for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

Hi Anna! I’m great, thanks! Been spending my holidays in the southern Italy, in Naples!

How exotic! First, can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

Yep, my name is Tonia, I’m 28 years old, and I’m the ancient Community Manager here at Spreaker. I say that because I’ve been here the longest, and I’m really proud of it :). I’m in charge of the community and all the activities regarding online marketing. Actually, I coordinate the other Community Managers who work at Spreaker, so I usually spend all of my time chatting on Skype with the girls in Argentina and the USA. I always get a bit confused between all the time zones, but I love it!

How did you start your job at Spreaker?

It was serendipity! I was thinking of moving back to Madrid, where I had lived for a couple of years, when a friend of mine told me that she had heard of a job vacancy here at Spreaker. It sounded really cool, so I said “Ok Tonia, this is Italy’s last shot at keeping, me or I leave,” and then sent in my resume. The interview went really well, and as you can see I’m still here.

And it wouldn’t be the same without you. Which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

I think that the entire platform is really amazing. I’ve seen it go through so many changes and improvements throughout my time here, and every day I love Spreaker more. If I had to choose one feature, I think that the app is totally the bomb! I mean, you can talk to the world at anytime, from everywhere; and now with the brand new Android app, lots of people get the chance to do just that. I give a standing ovation to the app, no doubt about it.

Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

There are many, many reasons. First of all, the team: we’re all pretty young (more or less) and we usually have lots of fun at work – Anna, you know what I’m talking about! I love listening to all the different content the site has to offer, and in so many different languages. I learn lots of interesting things just browsing through Spreaker.

I do know what you’re talking about! Do you have any fun memories you’d like to share?

Over a year ago, we held a launch party for Spreaker in Milan, and we had decorated the room with tons of helium balloons. By the end of the party we started playing with the helium tanks: we were breathing in the helium and then saying all this nonsense with terrible, high-pitched voices. I remember crying from laughing so hard.

If I only I could have been there for it! What are your favorite podcasts on Spreaker?

I usually listen to Tierra de Palabras, since I love Latin American poetry, and the guys at Radio Mente Viva. Their podcasts are great, and are all about the new Brazilian rock scene. I also recently discovered a professor at the University of Naples, Giuseppe della Pietra, giving Law classes via Spreaker. I think it’s really original!

What drives you crazy?

The lack of timeliness and accuracy. It drives me crazy!

Where can we find you on the internet?

Send me a tweet @toniamaffeo, and I’ll be happy to reply back! 🙂

Thanks Tonia!

Meet the Team Volume 3 #Francesco

0

Hi Francesco! Thank you for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

I’m good, thank you very much! I just came back to Italy from the US and will spend the holidays with my family.

Sweet! First, can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

Sure. My name is Francesco, I’m 36 and was born and raised in Bologna, Italy. I currently live in San Francisco, CA and I’m CEO at Spreaker. My job includes making sure that our team has all it needs to continue developing this amazing product, including – but not limited to – money in the bank account. So fund raising and pitching takes a lot of my time.

Busy guy, you really are always running around! How did you start your job at Spreaker?

Well, being a founder means that I’ve been here since the very beginning. There are different versions of the story of how we came up with the idea of Spreaker (and of course we like to keep a little mystery) but basically it has been a process with a number of refinement cycles. At some point, in late 2009, we founded the Company and I’ve been working for it full time since then.

Which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

I Love the mobile application: I think it makes it possible to do very cool stuff with our product. I am a great SF Giants fan (I loved baseball even before moving to San Francisco) and I can picture a number of fans in the audience broadcasting play-by-play of every ballgame. And the fact that these broadcasts can be syndicated in real time on a number of different platforms makes it easy to reach a huge audience.

An Italian that loves baseball, almost hard to believe! Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

We all invest a lot of our time listening to broadcasts & podcasts and I love seeing our product being used for a variety of purposes. Recently I was listening to some live broadcasts from the OWS movement (San Francisco chapter) and the people doing them were literally outside of our office windows in SF. It was a strange experience.

Do you have any fun memories that you would like to share?

Some months ago we were invited to an event taking place at this old chap’s place; he is a collector of radio (and not only) related stuff here in Bologna. He literally has priceless items stuffed in this garage… old gramophones, radios, juke boxes etc… But the funniest thing is that he is a former magician and stage actor. So he was able to deliver us an incredible visit! I remember him calling on the phone Princess Elettra Marconi (Guglielmo Marconi’s daughter) at the end of the visit, trying to explain what Spreaker does. We really had a lot of fun.

And makes for such a great story! What are your favourite podcasts on Spreaker?

Well, I listen to all the live game broadcasts from my hometown baseball team (Fortitudo Bologna Baseball).

What drives you crazy?

Negativity and excuses.

Last but not least, where can we find you on the internet?

@thebask

Thanks again for the interview, boss!

Meet the Team Volume 2 #Anna

Hi Anna! Thank you for doing this interview with us and taking time out of your busy schedule. How are you?

I’m great, thanks!

First, can you introduce yourself and let us know what you do at Spreaker?

My name is Anna, and I was born and raised in New York, but am now living in Italy. I’m one of the fabulous Community Managers here at Spreaker, answering your emails and posting on our blog and social networks. You’ve probably heard my interview with Dave Thackeray last week. On my off days you’ll catch me at home with a book, or visiting the local museums (I’m a bit of an art buff).

Your interview with Dave was great, we really enjoyed it! How did you start your job at Spreaker?

I was lucky enough to find this job about a year ago, and have been busily working here ever since! It was all a happy coincidence, I had found a posting online, interviewed, and in the end was hired.

I remember that day, it was a pleasure to meet with you. So, which Spreaker feature do you like the most?

I love the app. The idea of being able to record a show no matter where you are, of being an on-site reporter is really exciting. To think that that kind of complex technology is available as an app is incredible.

Can you give us a few reasons why it’s great working at Spreaker?

I know we keep saying it, and it may sound corny, but we really are a great team. Tonia, the other Community Manager here, and I have a lot of fun working together, joking around. Plus everyone is really open, and we’re small enough that we can bounce ideas around, and actual see our ideas come to life on the site in just a few months.
